Franchising opportunities provide brand recognition, management and administrative systems and a proven business model to small business owners. In theory, this should result in franchises having higher success rates than non-franchise business opportunities. But in practice, franchises can and do fail.

In a recent interview aired on CNN, Franchise.com President Nancy Ghanem gave her recommendations on franchise success and gauging realistic financial projections.

Ghanem believes franchises fail primarily because franchise owners do not adequately research franchise opportunities prior to purchase and they do not match personal attributes and interests to activities associated with the presented business opportunity.

Success of Franchise Began Early

Like many other decisions in baseball, the latest round of major league expansion had a domino effect on the minor leagues. In 1995, Arizona and Tampa Bay were awarded major league franchises to play their inaugural season in 1998. To keep pace, baseball's rookie level added two teams in 1996. The following year, Class 'A' and Class 'AAA' each increased by two teams.

That left only Class 'AA' in need of expansion to match the number of teams in the big leagues. In 1997, the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, as it was then called, decided the Eastern League would receive the two new franchises to start play in 1999. Erie was an easy first choice of the NAPBL's expansion committee. After all, the SeaWolves had established short-season attendance records in the new Uht Park as part of the New York-Penn League.

Popular Franchise Concepts in UK - Presented by WSI
The UK's first golf club cleaning franchise is investing in a growing golf market.

When he addressed the European Institute of Golf Course Architects, Dr. Klaus Ennemoser spoke of the growing golf market. Predicting future trends in the golf course market, Ennemoser told the EIGCA: "Within Europe, the UK and Ireland claim 51% of all European golf courses and 43% of all registered European golfers, yet only 15% of the European population."

"The number of non-registered "independent" golfers is also extremely high in the UK, where there are an estimated 1.25 to 1.75 million players. On the continent, the "Big Four" in the golf market are Sweden, Germany, France and Spain. These four countries have 68% of all golfers and 61% of all golf courses."
